National Limited English
Proficient (LEP) Advocacy Task Force
Mission Statement
The National LEP
Advocacy Task Force advocates for the rights of
individuals in the U.S. described by the federal
government as (LEP). Although there are alternative
proactive terms that describe such language status, we
will reluctantly retain
the term "LEP" since it is
utilized in
federal legislation, policies,
and a variety of other legal
documents.
The
Challenge
LEP individuals often are delayed equitable access to
and participation in the public policies, programs,
services, and benefits to which they are legally
entitled.
Our Purpose and Mission
The National LEP Advocacy Task Force supports the laws,
regulations, and policies prohibiting discrimination on
the basis of national origin because of language and
cultural differences.
Our mission is to take active steps through networking,
collaboration, education, and administrative and legal
advocacy to encourage recipients of federal funding and
public accommodations to:
 |
Comply with the legal obligations to provide
linguistically and culturally appropriate services. |
 |
Recognize, validate and develop the tremendous human
resource potential that our national diversity affords
us. |
What
We Do and How We're Organized
We organize our advocacy efforts through Task Force
Membership and Committees made up of area-specific
leaders, experts, and practitioners. Current committees
include Education, Health and Public Benefits,
Judiciary, Housing, Interpreter Standards, Migrant
Labor, Employment, Disabilities, AIDS, and Child
Advocacy.
